Trading journal template (with an emotions column)
A trading journal template that puts “Did I keep my rules?” and “How did I feel?” right next to your P&L. Download the CSV and open it in Excel, or copy the table and paste it into Google Sheets. It also opens in Numbers, LibreOffice Calc and spreadsheet apps on your phone.
New to this?
You getDownload the CSV and open it in a spreadsheet. That’s it: one row per trade. You can also copy the table and paste it.
What to enter, and the terms used
You enterHow many columns (6 basic or 9), whether to include example rows, and the CSV separator

What to write in each column
- Date
- Writing it as year-month-day, such as 2026-10-01, makes it easy to sort in any spreadsheet.
- Pair and Buy/Sell
- For example EUR/USD, Buy or Sell.
- P&L
- Just the number, in your account currency (no currency sign or thousands separators). Losses are negative. Decide whether to include commission and swap, and keep it the same every time.
- Kept my rules?
- Stick to Yes or No, so you can count them later.
- How I felt
- A word or two, before you enter or right after you close. For example: calm, rushed, wanted to win it back, confident, bored, tired. Reusing the same words lets you count them.
Formulas for a summary (6 basic columns)
- Total P&L
=SUM(D2:D500) - Share of trades where you kept your rules
=COUNTIF(E2:E500,"Yes")/COUNTA(E2:E500) - Average P&L when you kept your rules
=AVERAGEIF(E2:E500,"Yes",D2:D500) - Average P&L when you didn’t
=AVERAGEIF(E2:E500,"No",D2:D500) - How many times you felt “Rushed”
=COUNTIF(F2:F500,"Rushed")
These functions work in both Excel and Google Sheets. The Lots, Stop and Notes columns are added on the right, so the formulas also work with 9 columns. Format the share as a percentage. Depending on your regional settings, use ; instead of , between the arguments. In some language versions of Excel, function names are translated, so SUM or COUNTIF may have a different name.
How to use it
- Choose the columns and content on the left (you can add columns later).
- Download the CSV and open it in Excel, or press “Copy table” and paste it into cell A1 in Google Sheets.
- One row per trade. Right after you close, write the P&L, whether you kept your rules and how you felt.
- On a set day, such as once a week, use the formulas below to compare your P&L when you kept your rules with when you didn’t.
FAQ
The text looks garbled in Excel
The CSV is saved as UTF-8 with a BOM. If it still looks garbled, import it again with Data → From Text/CSV in Excel. If the import window lets you choose the file encoding, choose UTF-8.
Excel puts everything in one column
In regions that use a comma as the decimal mark, Excel may expect a semicolon between columns. Choose semicolon as the CSV separator and download again.
How do I use it in Google Sheets?
Press “Copy table”, select cell A1 in a new spreadsheet and paste. To use the CSV instead, go to File → Import.
What feelings should I write?
There are no fixed words. Write a word or two before you enter or right after you close. If you keep using the same words, a COUNTIF formula can count them.
Tiltnote is a journal app that keeps the same “kept my rules?” and “how I felt” for each trade. With the EA in MT4/MT5, closed trades are recorded automatically (paid plan). See the app →
