Prop firm drawdown: static vs trailing vs end-of-day
Prop firms set their max drawdown floor in different ways. Enter your daily balances once and see the floor and room left under three common methods side by side. Use it to understand which one your firm’s rules are closest to.
New to this?
You getThe floor under static, intraday trailing and end-of-day trailing drawdown, the room left, and the day a floor was breached
What to enter, and the terms used
You enterStarting balance, max drawdown (%), whether the floor stops at the starting balance, and each day’s closing balance (plus that day’s highest equity, if you know it)
New to these words?
Example: enter this, get this
- Account currency: USD, starting balance: 10,000, max drawdown: 10% (an example), floor does not stop
- Day 1: close 10,500 (intraday high 10,800). Day 2: 10,200
- Day 3: 9,600 (high 9,700). Day 4: 9,900 (high 10,100)
The max drawdown amount is 1,000. The static floor is 9,000, leaving $900. Intraday trailing lifts the floor to 9,800 from the 10,800 high, and the 9,600 close on day 3 breaks it. End-of-day trailing sets the floor at 9,500 from the 10,500 high close, leaving $400. The same numbers give very different results depending on the method.
The example numbers only show how the calculation works. They are not recommendations. Replace them with your own account’s numbers, or use “Clear inputs”.Where do I find these numbers?
- Daily balances and highest equity
- Often shown on your firm’s dashboard. For closing balances, you can also note the Balance in the Trade tab at the daily reset time
- Max drawdown and method
- Your firm’s rules page (look for words such as trailing and end of day)
The mobile app and platforms other than MT4/MT5 may use different names or places (for example, “Units” or “Lot size” for contract size). If you cannot find a number, check your broker’s help pages.
How it works
- Static: floor = starting balance − starting balance × max drawdown (%). It never moves.
- Intraday trailing: floor = the highest value so far (the higher of the end-of-day balance and that day’s highest equity) minus the max drawdown amount. It rises with each new high and never falls.
- End-of-day trailing: floor = the highest end-of-day balance so far minus the max drawdown amount. Each day is checked against the floor from the days before it. Even when the floor only moves at the end of the day, some firms check a breach against your equity at any moment during the day.
- If you choose to stop at the starting balance, the trailing floor never rises above the starting balance.
- A breach is checked against the end-of-day balance. A brief intraday dip below the floor is not detected.
FAQ
Which method does my firm use?
It is in your firm’s or plan’s rules. This tool does not decide. Look for words such as "trailing", "end of day (EOD)" or "based on equity" in the rules.
Is it based on balance or equity?
It depends on the firm. Where it is based on equity, including floating losses, dipping below the floor during the day can count at that moment. This tool only checks end-of-day balances as a guide.
If I never breach the floor, do I pass?
No. There are other rules, such as a daily loss limit, profit target, consistency rule and minimum trading days. Always check your firm’s official rules and dashboard.
Get warned before you hit your own loss limits.
On Tiltnote’s paid plan, the EA alerts you on your MT4/MT5 screen as you near your daily, weekly or monthly, or max loss limits you set (and on your phone, if you have set up MT4/MT5 push notifications). It never places trades for you. Manual logging is free.
