Swap calculator

See the total swap for holding a position overnight. Brokers can change swap rates daily, so enter the current value from your platform.

New to this?

You getThe total swap for the nights you hold (received or paid)

What to enter, and the terms used

You enterAccount currency, lot size, how the swap is entered (money or points), the swap per night, and nights held

New to these words?

lots
Choose the first if prices look like 1.08500 or 150.250, the second if they look like 1.0850 or 150.25. For gold, 1 point is 0.01 either way
Negative means you pay. Long and short rates differ
nights
At most brokers, one night a week counts as three. Add the extra two nights to the number you enter
Your entries stay on this device only and will be here next time. You can use . or , for decimals. If a number has separators, we show how it was read below the field.

Example: enter this, get this

  1. Account currency: USD, swap entered as money per lot per night
  2. Swap per night: −5.20 (negative means you pay), lot size: 0.5
  3. Nights held: 10 (count the extra nights on the triple-swap day)

Per night: −5.20 × 0.5 = −$2.60. Over 10 nights: −2.60 × 10 = −$26.00 (you pay). Over 30 nights it would be −$78.00. Brokers can change swap rates, so the real total can differ.

The example numbers only show how the calculation works. They are not recommendations. Replace them with your own account’s numbers, or use “Clear inputs”.

Where do I find these numbers?

Swap rates
Right-click the pair in Market Watch → Specification. The long and short swap rates are listed there (often in points)
Swap on open positions
The Swap column in the Trade tab
Triple-swap day
Your broker’s website. Some brokers also show it in the Specification

The mobile app and platforms other than MT4/MT5 may use different names or places (for example, “Units” or “Lot size” for contract size). If you cannot find a number, check your broker’s help pages.

How it works

  1. Money: total = money per lot per night × lots × nights
  2. Points: per night = points × point size × contract size × lots (converted to your account currency). Choose the point size in the “Point size” field. For 5-digit / 3-digit brokers (5 decimals, 3 for JPY pairs) one point is 0.001 for JPY pairs and 0.00001 for most others. For 4-digit / 2-digit brokers (4 decimals, 2 for JPY pairs) one point equals one pip: 0.01 and 0.0001. Gold is always counted as 0.01 per point. If your broker uses other decimals, enter the swap as money instead.
  3. Swap rates, the triple-swap day and how swap is charged differ by broker.
  4. Some brokers offer swap-free accounts (often called Islamic accounts), for example for religious reasons. These may charge an admin fee or wider spreads instead of swap.

FAQ

Is the swap the same every day?

Not always. Brokers can change rates, for example when interest rates move.

Is it worth holding a pair with positive swap?

This tool does not say. Price moves can be much larger than the swap.
